This is one of the best known Dalmatian words, which stands for a special state of bliss of sorts, which erases all your worries, leaving you unable to bother with anything or anyone. Let go and indulge in that feeling. Simply unwind and relax, and take a few pieces of advice from us on how to plan and use the remainder of your time here, and fit in with the locals.
And while you are at it, here are some words and phrases that can help you achieve all that.
AE!– Simply put, these two letters carry an almost universal meaning. We use the expressionaein the affirmative sense,i.e. whenever we agree with something, with the accompanying nodding of the head. At the same time, if used together with a shoulder shrug, it replaces the following sentence:It is what it is, there is nothing you can do about it.
SPIZA– This word literally means food. Andgetting spizastands for going shopping. In Dalmatia, all locally-sourced, fresh ingredients are purchased at apijacaor an outdoor market. Going to an outdoor market is more than just buying groceries – it is a ritual or sorts. It includes the mandatory coffee drinking, while the accompanying excitement and hubbub are typical of the Dalmatian spirit. The vendors will gladly give you something from their varied offer to taste, and if you wish to charm them, here is a handful of local words to use:četrunis a watermelon,milunorcatais a cantaloupe, whilebarakokulais an apricot. At the same time,balancanais Dalmatian for eggplant,pomaandpomidoraboth stand for tomato, andkukumaris a cucumber.
BRUDET– This is one of Dalmatia’s specialties and is prepared with fresh saltwater fish and tomato sauce, and seasoned with different spices. Commonly served with a side dish ofpuraor polenta,brudetis a classic, must-try culinary experience while holidaying in Dalmatia. The list of all the Dalmatian dishes that just might wow you is pretty extensive, and we suggest you try as many of them as possible.
BEVANDA– This is a mixture of either white or red wine and water. It is made to one’s liking orgušt, and the ratio of wine to water varies from person to person.Bevandais best enjoyed in the late afternoon hours, once the heat oržegadies down, or at lunchtime.
KA CUKARIN– If you hear these words from anyone in Dalmatia, know that they like you a lot. The expression translates tosweet as sugar.
The locals will appreciate you remembering and using any of these local words and expressions. Still, the word that you will probably use the most in Dalmatia isguštanje, i.e. enjoyment or indulgence in your well-deserved holiday.
